Rita's Genki update

I am so happy to have someone who I can brag about our new dog with! Genki (we are going to give him a new name, but we haven't found the right one, yet) is quite possibly one of the sweetest dogs I have ever met. For a dog who spent the last 6 months of his life in a kennel situation, he acts like he has lived with us forever. We have 2 doggy doors that go from the inside of the house, through the garage, to the outside, and he figured those out right away on the first day. So far he has done all his business outside and he is so easy to walk on a leash. I will send you a picture of him sleeping on our 14 yr old's twin bed, where our son says that Genki hogs the bed during the night. So cute!

He is going to be easy to train because he loves treats, but he understood the 'sit' command right away. He also offers his paw to shake, but he is more enthusiastic about that when there is a treat involved. I will work on the 'down' command next. I am planning to take him to a 7 week training class beginning in March.

We have a basket with about 10 toys in it for Genki, and each night he selects the toys one by one, and plays with them for a few minutes each. Then he goes back to the basket and picks another toy. He loves to play fetch with the tennis balls. We have a pool in our back yard, and it will be interesting to see if he wants to swim when the weather gets warmer.

So please let everyone know that their efforts have made one family so happy. It is just so hard to believe that someone would give up or abandon such a sweet dog. I will send pictures soon.

Rita's Genki adopted!

Congratulations to Rita's Genki, who found his forever home with the Horras family.

Genki recently came to us from Taiwan. We don't know much about his background, but the pictures that Rita sent to us showed a pup in pretty poor shape, and they also showed his transformation into a very handsome guy. He's a great dog, and was charming everyone when he arrived at LAX. He would sit and gaze lovingly at you, then lift his paw to shake - so cute! The Horras family recently lost their 11 yo lab and were looking for a new family member. They are an active family who have a lot to offer a dog, and seemed to be just what Genki was looking for. When we presented Genki as a match for them and they watched is video on the PT blog, they couldn't wait to meet him and had things ready for when he came home - there wasn't much doubt in their mind that Genki would be coming home with them. They went to CP on Sunday morning and it didn't take long for Genki to say, yep - their the ones! He's doing great and they are so happy to have him as part of their family.

Genki thanks Rita & MJ for finding him, getting him healthy and sending him to us. He thanks the Welcome Waggin' for quickly getting him out of his crate, and Gary and Dao for hosting him on his first night in the US. He thanks the CP Walking Team for taking him out every day, and Cecily and Ellen and Danny for doing the home visit. He's grateful to the Placement Team and PA Eva for finding his furver home, and Chevy for making introductions and sending him on his way.

Rita's Apple adopted!

Congratulations to Rita's Apple, who found her forever home with the Boller family.

Apple is a recent arrival from Taiwan. She was found by Rita & MJ last July with a bad skin problem and an ear hematoma from chronic ear infections. They got her well and asked us if she could come to the US to find her new home - of course! When she arrived she went to stay with foster mom Mary Jane, who said she was a WONDERFUL dog - Apple and Mary Jane's cat spent a good amount of time cleaning each other's faces. Apple got along great with the cats, with other dogs, with people - just an overall terrific pup. The Boller family was looking to add another Golden to their family to join their other pup, Ricky, who has cancer and also came from our rescue. We told the family that Apple would be a great fit for them and they quickly set up a meeting to meet her - it didn't take long for everyone to know she was a keeper. She's enjoying her new home, is getting along great with Ricky and they coudn't be happier to have them become a part of their family.

Apple thanks Rita & MJ for finding her and getting her healthy, then sending her to California. She was so happy to see the Welcome Waggin' after that long plane ride and attached herself to Mary Jane knowing she'd get great care until her furever family came along. She's grateful to Sandra for scouting out her new home, and the Placement Team and PA, Jo Anne, for making a wonderful match.

Casey (we've dropped the "Rita's" part and added "At the Bat") is now a full-fledged member of the family and knows exactly where the dog treats are kept. No one can walk past the closet without she doesn't get up and furiously wag her tail. Then when you try to ignore her, the eyes, oh my, the eyes. We did have a lovely stroll by the beach, she's such a sweet girl. She was well behaved. Well except for the time we went past 2 gentlemen playing bocci or some such bowling game. She insisted that the balls were actually hers. That took a little sorting out, but we got it explained to her eventually.

Rita's Toby adopted!

Congratulations to Rita's Toby, who found his forever home with Tom and Patty and their dog, Tara.

Toby came in last month from Taiwan, a happy, friendly high energy pup who was looking for an active home and another pup to play with. He hasn't had much training, so he was also looking for a family that was willing to work with him on his manners. Tom and Patty adopted Tara from us last October and knew that once she was settled they wanted to bring in a second dog. They recently contacted us to let us know they were ready, and they looked like just the right home for Toby. They quickly set up a meeting and he and Tara got along great, and it didn't take long for the family to decide that Toby was going home with them. He's doing great and learning some manners.

Toby thanks Rita and MJ for finding him, making sure he was healthy and sending him to California. He thanks the Welcome Waggin' for meeting him at LAX and springing him from his crate. He thanks the CP Walking Team for getting him regular exercise and love. He also thanks Lois for making sure this was a terrific home for a pup. He's grateful to the Placement Team and PA Lisamarie for matching him up with his new peeps, and finally he thanks Paul for making intro's and sending him on to his new life. My name is Leia (Rita's Tina) and I wanted to let you know how I'm doing since I've been adopted in August. My family loves me a lot. I like to walk my brothers out to the street before they leave for school. I am very well behaved, even without a leash, but sometimes I'll go visit other dogs as they walk by. I've learned to stay on the porch when the squirrels and birds are out to play in my neighborhood.

My sister has taught me to dance and dress cool. I don't jump on anyone unless they ask to dance. I like to go to soccer games to cheer for my family, although I'd rather be the one to play with the soccer ball. I am still learning about my cat family members so I study about them and I'm learning patience. They live upstairs so I just let them and stay downstairs without ever being told not to go on the stairs. I'm good about that. My daily walks are fun so I'm very well behaved. Thank you to everyone who helped me find my family. I love them very much!

Happy New Year! We are so sorry that it has taken us so long to provide an update on our wonderful golden! Liu Liu (formerly "Kim"), who found her forever home with us on May 1, 2010, is doing very well! She is the light of our lives, and we love her very much. She continues to be such a smart dog, and is also very loving and protective of us. Although Liu Liu always tries to please us, she does not like anybody who comes on our property who she doesn't know such as the mail carrier, gardener, or anybody who rings our doorbell. In November, Liu Liu chased away a stranger who had jumped into our backyard. Potential burglars beware!

We aren't sure what to think of Liu Liu's newest exploit. For the past few months, when we are not home, Liu Liu has been taking our kitchen towels outside through the dog door and burying them quite deep in our flower beds. We have found several of them, along with some beef bones we had given her, when digging with a shovel. Well, at least Liu Liu is only taking our kitchen towels - our shoes or clothes would be much worse!

Liu Liu has also discovered that she LOVES swimming in our pool. This past summer, our daughter, who had watched an episode of Dog Whisperer where Ceasar Milan teaches some dogs to be comfortable in a swimming pool, worked with her. (We introduced Liu Liu to our pool when we first got her so in case she fell in she would know how to easily get out, but she was always too scared to go in by herself.) Well, that has changed, thanks to Ceasar and our daughter! Whenever our pool cover is off, you can find Liu Liu happily swimming around in either the pool or attached spa. Fortunately, we have a heavy-duty automatic retractable cover for the pool so we can control when Liu Liu swims.

Nora (formerly Rita's Melissa) is much loved not only in this house but also in the neighborhood. She is sweet, friendly, curious and, of course, hungry all the time. Isn't that just like a golden???? She has given my husband and me much joy and absolutely no trouble.

Please thank all the folks that made her life with us possible--Rita, the people who transported her, and those who cared for her until we got her. I look at the pictures of the rescue and I can't imagine the path she took to get here. But here she is and she is loved and I believe that she knows that now.

Tyler (formerly Edward) has settled in and is making a great addition to the family. He's smart, adorable and is a great companion. We go to starbucks every morning and he knows it's time and hops in the truck eagerly being my passenger. We walk everyday and on the weekends go out in the reserve where he and Oliver can run and investigate everything. He's quite curious. Every evening before we go to bed, we walk them around the block. They each have collars with red lights on them and it's a site to see. Six red lights in the dark walking down the street. They look like Aliens. We are so enjoying Tyler and are checking into getting him a little more training.

Pang Pang and I share a few of the same Resolutions - to get more exercise, increase play time (with Petey) and eat fewer cookies!

Incredibly our 2012 calendar is already filling up and we are very excited about new opportunities to advocate for seniors and their pets. We plan to continue Pang Pang's training and work more with local Senior Centers and Veterans' organizations. Pang Pang loves the opportunity to socialize and very much enjoys attention, as you know.

Thanks once again for all you do to make it possible for the rest of us to enjoy the amazing gifts that Rita and Maggie send our way.

Maggie's Peter adopted!

Maggie's Peter has decided to stay with his foster family. Katrina and Craig had lost both of their Goldens about 6 months ago and were missing having the Golden paws and fur in their home but were not ready to adopt. So they decided to foster and help out a pup in need.

Maggie's Peter arrived from Taiwan just before Thanksgiving. He spent some time at Culver Palms before being taken in by Katrina and Craig. Katrina and Craig were natural fosters because of the care, caution and supervision they provided right away. Peter proved to be very lively but loveable. Apparently he enjoyed pulling books from their shelves and absorbing knowledge through a bit of nibbling on the bindings. After a few days enjoying the time at their house, Katrina and Craig decided to call him Petey and ask if they could start some professional training with him. At that point they knew that Petey would be staying with them...forever.

Peter would like to thank Maggie and Joseph for finding him and sending him to the US. Peter also thanks the wonderful team of walkers at Culver/Palms that gave him lots of exercise and socialization. Thanks also to Sandy for placing Peter in this wonderful home.

Postcard from Polo

Polo is getting settled in very nicely. Both boys did so well on the drive home, and they cuddled up together in the car. When we got home, we let them both just run the property and explore together. I have a lot of pictures to send you. Garrett just fed both of them, and I know they will be ready for bed early tonight-such a big day for the boys! Rita's Ella adopted!

Congratulations to Rita's Ella, who will be known as Bella, found a new forever home on Monday, December 26, 2011 with the O'Brien family.

Mr. O'Brien just retired, and the family wanted to bring a Golden into their home. Although Ella is on the small side, she most certainly exhibits Golden traits such as always wanting to be next to her people. The family thought she was just so sweet, and was already following Paul around the house. We made introductions between Ella and their Lab mix, Wal-E, and that went very well to where Ella said to me, "Bobby, this is the place I want to stay, a big home with a big yard to run around in, a nice boy and a nice family, and I'll have Wal-E to play with. Just hurry up and take my picture, I'll be just fine here!"

We first met Ella the evening she arrived from Taiwan. Sandy asked us if Ella could come stay out with us, and we said sure. Well, little Ella turned out to be just a real sweetheart. For a pup that's supposedly 8 years old, she exhibits the energy of a 2 year old, and loves to play with the boy pups, and for some reason, likes to pull their necks! She is also very fond of Nestor and would always follow him around the house. Ella would also whine when Nestor left for the office. As soon as the garage door closed, I would let Ella out into the garage so she had proof that indeed Nestor was not there. She loved her walks, and she most enjoyed sleeping on one of the beds with the other pups.

Ella will be forever thankful to Rita & MJ for rescuing this sweet little girl, and getting her healthy before leaving Taiwan. She thanks Sandy for her part in getting her to CA, and to the Welcome Waggin Team for greeting her and her companions on her arrival. She was very happy to spend time with Nestor & Bobby, along with their crew of Lindsay, Roger, Boomer, Mushu & Apollo, and for a short time, Lance & Portia. She also thanks Laura for finding this wonderful family, Kriss as the foster coordinator, the staff at Culver Palms for getting her vetted, and Jo Anne and the placement team for making the match!

Congratulations to Rita's Polo, who found his forever home with the Pellisier family.

Polo arrived from Taiwan with a few other pups on Halloween night. After getting vetted this senior guy went to stay with Tom and his crew, waiting for just the right home to come along. During his stay he enjoyed swimming with Kazoo, going to work with Tom and watching football from Tom's easy chair (relegating Tom and the other pups to the sofa.) His patient wait was rewarded this week, after the Pellisier family contacted us about adopting another dog. They had gotten Maggie's Bingo (now Hunter) from us last year and wanted to bring in a second pup. After reviewing their home visit report Polo said this was exactly what he was looking for - someone around most of the day, another pup to play with, kids to hang out with, lots of room to run around and a big pool to swim in - sounds like doggy nirvana, huh? The Pellisiers thought Polo sounded like a great fit for them and agreed to meet him - well, pretty much to just take him home as there wasn't much doubt he was going to become a member of their family. I talked to Kathy yesterday and Polo is having a blast with their son and Hunter. She thought it was so cute that he always has to have a ball or toy in his mouth. They are so happy for their new addition and have re-named him Bowler, because bowling is one of their favorite activities.

Polo would like to thank Rita and MJ for finding him, getting him healthy and sending him to the US. He thanks the Welcome Waggin' for meeting him after his long trip and getting him quickly out of his crate. He's grateful to Lisa D. who did the home visit on the Pellisier family, and he thanks Tom for taking such great care of him while he was waiting for the Pellisiers to find him. Happy Holidays from Tai (formerly Rita's Willy)

Tai is doing great! He's such a happy boy.

We did have a tough summer, though, with the loss of his big brother, Buster (our nearly 13-year-old black lab mix). Tai and Kiara (another GRCGLAR) had a tough time recovering from the loss. After a couple months of sad faces, Tai and I drove to San Diego to meet and bring home his new little brother, Sam (a 2-year-old black lab we rescued). Tai and Sam are best buddies. They play, wrestle and taunt each other with toys every day. They are having a ball together, and both Tai and Kiara have the pep back in their steps with a young whippersnapper in the house.

I've attached our annual holiday card and a picture of Tai and Sam performing WWF moves. They are a hoot to watch - and so gentle with each other.

I hope all of the other Taiwan dogs are thriving in their new homes as well. It's hard to believe it has already been two years since Tai came to us.

We didn't make it to Octoberfest this year, but Ollie (Rita's Boss) does want to make sure everybody sees him in the Fields of Gold Calendar. He is Mr January, and also has a picture on the December page. (Top, middle, lying in the snow) He has had a wonderful holiday, with lots of family walks, play time, and tons of attention. Ollie loves to be the center of attention at a gathering! He got a new bed, and new toys as well. Its enough to wear a doggie out, so you can see him contentedly resting in the new bed by the tree.

I had been told how wonderful the Welcome Waggin experience was in greeting the Tiawan pups so a few months back I went to welcome the arrival of Gary. I just happened to be the one who opened his crate here in America and into my arms leaped this big white bear-like fellow. One can fall in love with any of these beautiful Goldens but today it was with Gary. He is an easy going fellow who draws attention from most everyone when we go for a walk with people wanting to pet and hug him. And he is a great pillow when watching TV. Our two other Goldens at the time welcomed him into our family and Buddy especially loves to wrestle with Gary. He has been healthy. Woof, Woof from Gary!

It never occurred to us that we might add a fourth Golden to our family but then along came another Welcome Waggin for four Tiawan Project pups and it just happened that I opened Yellow"s (now Daisy) crate and this tiny puppy-like little girl jumped into my lap and filled my face with kisses - that was it! She is now this little princess among her new three brothers - Gary, Buddy & Moof. She is definitely "Paul's little girl" as they are inseparable - will lie on Paul's lap when he watches TV, always by his side. She is a smart cookie - knows many commands, shakes with either paw, will get her leash when it is time for all the pups to go on their two long walks each day, will chase a ball forever and is a total love bug. Woof, Woof from Daisy!

As is always the case with these wonderful Goldens they will give you back 100-fold for just giving you a bit of loving & a nice home. So THANK YOU, THANK YOU Rita, MJ & All the Tiawan Rescue Helpers for the wonders you have done in rescuing ALL these Goldens and setting them on their way to a happy and safe permanent home.

Happy Holidays from Pang Pang

We have had the most wonderful holiday season with Pang Pang – topping off an amazing year for our beautiful girl! She attended a number of holiday parties with our seniors who tried hard not to share their cookies but from the looks of Pang Pang, I think they did! It was so much fun to watch our celebrity princess posing for photos with her people and their grandchildren. She continues her love affair with the camera! She received so many gifts and we gave out several for her. We made a wonderful calendar, featuring her, and had several paw prints framed through Piggy’s & Paws – the cutest things ever! She and Petey have been eye-balling their stockings for weeks. Tomorrow morning will be so much fun with them!

Pang Pang was featured in a wonderful article in the Riverside Press Enterprise last fall, with photos, which described the difference she has made in our senior community. That article was so heartwarming and positive, explaining the value of pet therapy and animal rescue. We actually had phone calls, requesting information about how we were able to adopt such a wonderful dog. China Television picked up the article and asked if they could film a segment for their Los Angeles and Taiwan stations. Four wonderful reporters came out and had so much fun with her. They spent hours playing with her and talking to residents. The story was incredible! In addition, Pang Pang was featured in an article in the Apartment Association of the Greater Inland Empire Magazine and because of that, the National Apartment Association magazine editor has expressed interest in a similar article for next year. This is all so incredible - because through Pang Pang we are able to emphasize how important pets are to seniors, why more multi-housing communities should adopt and the pure joy of animal rescue.

As this year ends, I want to thank you all and Rita again – from the bottom of my heart. I could not have known when I saw that perky golden face on-line, eighteen months ago, that Pang Pang would make such a difference in so many lives. She is truly a gift and at this time of year especially, it is so important to tell you how very much she means to us.

We celebrated our 2nd anniversary with Mars on November 25, 2011. He has been a great addition to the family. As you know, I foster many dogs and cats so he has a great time welcoming everyone and making them feel comfortable. He's been a wonderful ambassador.

We love him even though he's developed a recent habit of getting paper out of the trash can and chewing it up in my bedroom. LOL Now, we have to hide the cans and my house shoes too. He's riverting to a puppy stage. He's so funny, He is truly a cherished member of the family and we again extend our thanks and gratitude to Rita and MJ for saving his life and sending him to the USA where he is happy... oh, and has a full belly even if he acts like he has never had a meal. I know this should bring back memories for them. Please share our update and pictures with them. Thank you, David and Sonsee, for all that you do.

Rita's Summer adopted!

Congratulations to Rita's Summer, who found her forever home with Judy and Gabe and their pup, Emma.

Summer was found by Rita and MJ covered in hundreds of ticks. They took her in, cleaned her up and got her healthy before sending her to us in September. The Welcome Waggin' was expecting a mellow 7-year-old when we let Summer out of her crate - instead we got an super energetic girl who was bouncing all over the place, jumping and spinning - she was very entertaining. She's a little girl with the cutest face, big feet and short legs - just adorable. She spent some time at Culver Palms, and then Tom W. agreed to take her home when his last foster got adopted. Kriss dropped her off at Tom's work, where she peed several times in his office and pooped in the elevator. You've got to give him credit for taking her home! Thankfully, Summer quickly adjusted, learning the routine and settling down. It's taken a bit longer to find her forever home, because most of our applicants who are willing to take a dog her age are looking for a mellow pup. As Summer got used to being with Tom and his crew she did mellow out a bit and when the Judy and Gabe came along. They were so excited when we presented Summer as a match and couldn't wait to set a meeting. Tom brought her out to their home and she proceeded to run around their home jumping on every piece of furniture (the pups aren't allowed on the furniture in their hom.). She's so sweet they overlooked her initial manners and knew she was the right pup to add to their family and to keep Emma company (Emma's been missing their Flat Coat Retriever, Charlie, who recently passed away). Tom said they would just have to train her to stay off the furniture - I said, she'll probably train them that it's okay!

Summer thanks Rita and MJ for finding her and getting her well, then sending her to us. She thanks the Welcome Waggin' for meeting her at LAX and getting her out of the crate asap. She thanks the CP dog walkers for getting her out when she was staying there, and she's so happy to have been able to stay at the Walas Dog Haus waiting for just the right family. We live on 2 1/2 acres in the Wine Country of Temecula, and he loves running and chasing rabbits on our property. He loves going for walks and playing catch with the tennis ball. Please send our sincere gratitude to the Taiwan team for their hard work and dedication. We often wonder what Hunter's life was like in Taiwan, and we are so thankful that you all cared enough to rescue him. We are sending some pictures of Hunter-he is a much loved part of our family!

Hi There Maggie and Joseph:

I just wanted to write and tell you what a wonderful year I have had and thank you for saving my life. It will be a year next week that I have been staying at my “forever home.” My hip is now fully healed and I go on long walks every day and don’t limp anymore at all – the vet says I can do anything I want!!

I have settled in wonderfully. I started off my being obsessed with the cat – but now she and I sleep together on the couch and are “best buddies” In March my “golden sister” Morgan passed away – she was 12-1/2 – she had cancer. It was very sad and mom was very upset and felt bad for me since I was just beginning to bond with Morgan. She and I were both very depressed. So in June my baby brother Milo came to live with us. He was a very naughty boy at the beginning and pulled my ears and bit on me. I was very tolerant and patient with him and now he is eight months old and knows my “boundaries” We play together, sleep together and he is just a ball of fun and energy. He sleeps in an X-pen in mom’s office during the day – not sure if its to give me a break so I can catch up on my beauty sleep or if its because mom wants to keep an eye on him!!!

Anyhow – the BIG NEWS is that I passed the test to become a therapy dog in October. Unfortunately mom is not able to take me (she has to earn money to pay for my cookies I guess!) so my therapy partners are her friend Daleen and Daleen’s daughter Acacia. I just looove going out and meeting all the people. We go to the Senior Citizen home, we go to a Teen Rehab Center, and we go to a school and “help” the children read. Having me there makes them feel “special” and gives them extra confidence to read out loud – since I don’t care if they make mistakes – I just like their company. I attached a picture of me reading at the school with Acacia – as you can see – I am a very good listener!! Going to the school is my favorite – but I love all the places we go to – and the people there are so happy to see me. I have ten supervised visits – and then I am “official” and get my therapy dog “vest” – so I will send you a picture of me wearing it – in the next few months. So far I have seven visits under my paw!!! I will be certified with “Love on a Leash” – and that is sure a fitting description for me!!

Attached are two pictures. The one is me and my baby brother Milo. The other is me at the school “helping” the children read.

I hope that all the rescue workers in Taiwan, Maggie and Joseph, and everyone at Golden Rescue has a wonderful Xmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year. I am forever grateful to you for giving me the opportunity to enjoy the rest of my life surrounded by love and happiness.

Penny is such a good girl and brings us so much joy! We don't know what we would do without her. Bailey is doing great! She goes to work with my husband, Tony, each day and is the star of the office. Tony runs an agency/homes for abandoned and abused children and I am told each day how Bailey is the bright spot for all the employees and well as some of the kids who have never known such a sweet and loving soul before. Bailey also has a strong personality and will let you know exactly what she is feeling at all times. She makes us laugh all the time, is full of life and is loved beyond belief. Adopting Bailey was one of the best decisions we ever made as she brings so much joy into our lives! Thank you Rita, Maggie and Joseph & GRCGLA Rescue!

Otto has become the official office pup at work. We had a pretty tough quarter and I received many requests for Otto to come in to help with morale. He even made it into our global company newsletter and holiday video! That's a pretty big deal with a worldwide employee count of 700.

Thanks for calling and checking up on Hannah! I am sure my husband told you that she is still as wonderful as the day we adopted her.

I have enclosed s few pictures that we took of her this year. In February we introduced Hannah to the snow. We took the kids and all three dogs to Lake Arrowhead. Hannah had a blast! She spent her days running up and down the snow covered hills while the kids would sled. In fact, the first day she ran around so much that she was too exhausted to climb the stairs that night to go to bed. So David carried her up. The next day she paced herself a little better :)

We also took her to the beach in Del Mar so she could run around on the beach. A little timid at first with the waves, but she soon realzied that the waves are fun. I included a picture of her running with our daughter.

Hannah is such a joy to have in our house. She gets along so well with our two Shih Tzus (Broadley and Katie). She also adores our two children (Alysse and Aidan). The only time the kids get upset with her is when she steals their strawberries, tomatoes and cucumbers from their garden they were growing. Hannah is still our veggie and fruit lover! She will stare you down if you have any of her favorites in your hand (i.e. apple, carrot, banana, orange, apricot, the list goes on).

Thank you so much for rescuing Hannah! We love knowing that we are giving her a happy life here in San Diego. In return, she gives us a wagging tail every morning as we start our day.

Please feel free to contact us anytime or come and visit Hannah when you are in San Diego. We would all enjoy that!

Happy Holidays from Magic (formerly Rita's Mocha)

I have attached a few pictures of Magic (aka Rita’s Mocha). We picked him up the day after Thanksgiving last year and it has been a great year. I attached a picture of Christmas last year with his extended family. Also pictures of Magic with his “sisters”.

We love Magic and he really enjoys being in a routine around here. Every morning during the week he walks with my husband Neil at 6 a.m. Then he spends his day with me, since I work from home. We usually take another walk in the afternoon. On the weekends he goes with my husband to the river trail where he meets up with his people and dog friends. They usually are gone for 2-2 ½ hours….so he comes home exhausted and happy.

He has adjusted, but it took time. The first few months he always needed to be at my feet…he wouldn’t even go outside unless I took him. I knew he felt comfortable once he would sit in the backyard in the sun, when I was in the house. He still prefers to be with people all the time, but he does enjoy chasing the squirrels on the fence. The last attachment shows him staring at the squirrel who is sitting on the fence.

We got Magic about 5 weeks after our beloved golden retriever Sami died at 10 years old. Magic has helped us heal and I think we have helped him heal from his past.

He has been a true blessing and we can’t imagine our lives without him.

Here are pictures of the G Man at his new home on Conesus Lake NY. Let me tell you, he is livin' the life! He swims now and chases ducks, is obsessed with riding in boats and is spoiled by all the neighbors who dote on him and keep his favorite treats at their houses. In one shot you can see one of the neighbor kids wearing a gilligan mask which was a surprise party for the second Gilliversary (of the date that I adopted him).

So far it has only snowed once here, which is unusual for this area and Gilligan at first was confused and ran in the house but then quickly decided he loved it and was jumping around like a puppy in the snow. There is another shot where you can see a large Lake Heron in the distance at the end of the dock. Gilly stalks him.

Happy Holidays from Barley (formerly Rita's Michael)

We continue to feel so lucky to have Barley (formerly Rita's Michael) in our lives. He continues to go to work with us each and every day and seems disappointed on Sundays when we all stay home! He has a loyal following and has become the ambasodor for our veterinary hospital. We have some clients and children who stop by on a regular basis just to say hello to Barley and give him a few belly rubs. He laps up all the attention without ever once demanding it. He has, on more than one instance, quieted the nerves of a hospitalized patient by laying outside their cage, and even offered comfort to several who have had to say goodbye to their furry friends. The most touching instance was with a fellow Golden that was terminally ill. Barley walked into the exam room and layed down in front of the dog extending his paw so it was touching the other dog's paw. And while we may be projecting a little human emotion, it truly seemed as though he was there to hold the other dog's hand in a difficult time. We are so grateful to have him in our lives and can't imagine life without him. We have attached a few pictures of him "at work".

Lulu has been with us for two and half years and is the sweetest little girl. She arrived in LA on 2/27/09 along with Ben and Rosie and were the first group to come over from Taiwan. We took Lulu home that night from the airport and she has never left. Lulu has an older brother Sherman and a little sister, Maddy, who joined us this year. Lulu is attached at the hip with her dad and sleeps with us every night. All of our kids join us on vacations each year to Big Bear and Palm Springs. She is a happy, mellow girl and goes with us on all of our home visits. She is such a wonderful ambassador for our rescue as she loves everyone. She is very spoiled as all goldens should be. We are so thankful to Rita and MJ for rescuing her and bringing her into our lives. I have attached two recent photos. One of Lulu and one of Sherman and Lulu.

Maggie's Camila adopted!

Congratulations to Maggie's Camila, who has found her forever home with Kathy and Larry along with 13-year-old pup, Champ.

Camila came to us recently from Taiwan. It was very apparent this girl has been a mom multiple times (she was turned down by two families because of this!) and I'm sure she was ready to come to the US and relax! She's a fantastic pup with a great, mellow personality who loves everyone she meets, enjoys other dogs and gets along with cats. Kathy and Larry recently lost their Golden, Humphrey, who was adopted from us - they don't feel their home is complete without two Goldens, so were anxious to provide a great home to another one of our pups. They seemed to be just what Camila was looking for (and vice versa!)

This has got to be one of the fastest placements we've done. Camila was presented to them by the PA and they said they wanted to meet her, I called them about a half hour later to talk more about her and then put the foster mom in touch with them. Less than two hours later I received an email from the foster mom that Camila was on her way home! Kathy and Larry report that Camila is doing great and they are so happy to have her in their lives and home. She's getting along great with Champ, although is having fun chasing the cats. The adoption picture was done on Larry's camera and he promises to send a copy to me soon.

Camila owes her life to Maggie and ARTT, for finding her, getting her well and sending her to CA. She's grateful to the Welcome Waggin' for greeting her at LAX and quickly getting her out of her crate. She thanks foster mom Mary Jane for taking care of her during her stay with us, and Eva for checking out her new home. And, she thanks the Placement Team and PA Jo Anne for making this terrific match.

Congratulations to Maggie's Candy, who found her forever home with Courtney and Marcus and their dog Paisley.

Candy recently arrived from Taiwan and is a friendly and engaging petite girl with a lot of energy and enthusiasm. She was found on the streets intact, heartworm positive and erlichia positive, and spent a couple of months getting healthy and then spayed. She loves people, other dogs and is also good with cats. Courtney and Marcus are a young couple who were lookng a second dog as another family for them and a companion for Paisley, who is a bit shy but playful, and their kitten. When everybody met, Candy didn't take long to charm Courtney and Marcus - she's really good at gazing lovingly at you and batting her eyelashes, which she did to Marcus. It probably took about 2 minutes to have him under her thumb, er, paw. She and Paisley got along well and before long, everyone was loaded into the car for the drive home. She's doing great and Courtney sent the following email:

She is doing wonderful. The ride home was so easy she slept the whole way home and played as soon as she got here. Paisley is really enjoing her company and the 2 of them have been having a blast and without any problems. We are so glad she is a part of our family and it seems that with each day she is becoming more comfortable. She is also getting along with the kitty. You were right about her being a lover. She sits right by us and just loves when we pet her and talk to her. Thank you so much for suggesting her. We absolutely love her and her sweet personality.

Candy would like to thank Maggie and ARTT for finding her, getting her healthy and sending her to us. She thanks the Welcome Waggin' for meeting her at LAX and especially Marty for taking her home overnight. She's grateful to the CP Walking Team for getting her regular exercise and love during her stay there. How I spent my summer vacation by Kai

My mom and dad took me and my Golden sister Lani to this wonderful place called Loews Coronado Bay Resort for their birthdays. I really like this place because we get to sleep in this nice room and lay on our own private balcony and guard it from those big white birds that like to try and steal our food. My sister and I caught one on our balcony, but dad yelled at us and he escaped. Dad wasn’t too happy with us that day. The people here are so nice to me and my sister. Every day someone brings this big wagon to our room and it has all of this food on it.

Dad says we have to dress for dinner, and to remember our manners. I know I’m not supposed to help myself, but it smells so good. Roast beef, green beans, rice, and scrambled eggs in my own fancy silver bowl. They really know how to spoil us here!

We get to go to this beautiful beach and run and play with all of the other dogs that live there. I even followed my sister Lani out into the water one day. It was hot and it felt so good that I just laid down in the water. I got all wet and sandy and dad wasn’t very happy about that. I had to get another bath, and I just had one the day before!

I have made some really nice friends here; Daryl is the director of Safety and Security (not sure what that means), but he is a really nice man and he has a really cool golf cart. (I wish he would take me for a ride.) Aana is a really nice lady that we see at the front desk, and my newest friend is Reuben who took me for a ride on his bellman’s cart. I really liked that!

I can’t wait to go back there again. I want to send a high paw out to everyone at GRCGLA Rescue, my foster Mom Cheryl, and to my very special friends Maggie and Joseph- thank you for saving my life. Don’t worry about me, I’m living the good life!

Everything's going great here! We have renamed him Riley.. He's getting used to his new name and responds to it most of the time. Our family Labs are enjoying his company and are often sitting outside our glass doors waiting for him to come out to play. It's fun watching him romp around the yard with the other dogs. He appears happy and is eating and sleeping well and walks with me down to our village where he gets lots of attention. When we walk, my daughter brings one of her goldens along and they do well together. He's getting acquainted with our family and all the pets.We've had no trouble with him in or out of the house. Rita's Schnappi adopted!

Schnappi arrived a couple of months ago from Taiwan, with Tim, Ella and Summer. When Rita contacted us about him and I sent out his picture to the group, I can't tell you how many emails I got from people wanting this dog. Schnappi is an easy going, mellow boy who was happy to hang out with foster dad Tom waiting for just the right family. He attracted quite a bit of attention when Tom walked him, Fisher and Kazoo together - the dark red of Kazoo, the classic gold of Fisher and Schnappi's white coat made quite a picture!

Paul and Mary haven't had a dog for almost 10 years, and decided it was time to have a furry companion. They live in a house on their son's property - their son and his family have two labs, but Paul and Mary wanted their own pup. This very nice couple was so excited when we suggested Schnappi as a match for them. And when they met him, there was no question - Schnappi had a new family! He's settling in very well and they couldn't be happier. His new name is Riley.

Schnappi would like to thank Rita and MJ for finding him and sending him to us to find his forever home. He thanks the Welcome Waggin' for greeting him when he arrived, and Lisamarie for taking him home overnight. He thanks Tom and his crew for giving him such a great place to hang out while waiting for the perfect home. Rita's Tim adopted!

Congratulations to Rita's Tim, who found his forever home with Jason, Brandy and their two other dogs and two cats.

Tim came to us from Taiwan back in September. He had been found by a friend of Rita's about a year ago, and was very underweight. Under the excellent care of Rita, MJ and their vets, Tim gained weight and got healthy so he could travel to the US. This very active boy has been looking for a forever home where he would get a lot of love, attention and exercise, and he found that family this weekend in Jason and Brandy. They had contacted us earlier this year looking for an older golden as a companion to them and their senior Golden and Pekingese, but ended up adopting a young Saint Bernard. A few weeks later their senior golden passed away, so after the St Bernard had time to settle in they came back to us - because as we all know, no home is complete without a Golden! We suggested Tim as a good fit to them, and after watching his video they were anxiuos to meet him. Everyone got along great and off Tim went to start the rest of his wonderful life with Brandy and Jason.

Tim would like to thank Rita and MJ (and their friend) for getting him into rescue, healthy and ready to come to the US. He thanks the Welcome Waggin' for greeting him when he arrived, and the Tom's Bed & Breakfast for giving him a place to stay his first night. He's grateful to the CP Dog Walking Team for walking and spending time with him during his stay at CP. I can't believe that it's been almost 3 years since we "fostered" our handsome boy Buddy (formerly known as Braveheart), and 2 years for our beautiful Alice (Rita's Alice). They are everything that we hoped for, and more. Adopting these seniors brought a loving, calm energy to an otherwise crazy house. They are officially called the coolest dogs ever by my 18 year old son and his friends! We struck "gold" when we got them.

Casey is certainly a joy. Now if we can just get her to stop piddling on the carpet...

Not to worry, we'll get it sorted out. She's already worked her way into our hearts. I think we've discovered a favorite toy. I had her outside for a potty break in the rain and came back inside and went to dry her off with a towel. Well, one swipe and she was after it, wrestling and tug of war. Now every time we go downstairs "Mr. Towel" gets involved in one way or another.

She's a very sweet girl and we really love having her around. I'll try and keep you posted with whatever photos or video. Here she is on day one after her first walk, a little tired but none the worse for the wear.

Congratulations to Rita's Casey, who found her forever home with Bonnie, Mark and Alex!

Casey is a beautiful, active girl who never stops smiling and loves everyone she meets. She waited patiently for the perfect family, and they showed up this weekend to take her home. Bonnie, Mark, Alex and grandma came out to meet Casey. They even brought grandma's 10 year old Sheltie mix, Jake, to make sure that everyone approved (they did). Casey was brilliant, sitting like such a sweet girl (I think that she only jumped up on the son twice). After a wonderful visit, the family unanimously agreed that she was their dog. Papers were signed, and in she jumped into the back of the minivan. Tails were wagging, and off they wen.

Casey is forever grateful to Rita and MJ for finding her and sending her to the US, and to Barbara D. for approving her trip. She thanks the Welcome Waggin' team for being there to meet her when she arrived in CA, and Nestor and Bobby for taking her home overnight after her long trip. She also thanks the CP Walking team for helping get her her regular exercise. She is indebted to Corinna for doing the home visit on her new family, and the Placement Team and Eva for making the perfect match for her. She's also thankful that Chevy was able to make the introductions and help her off on her newest adventure. Mark reports that she's doing great and they are all in love with her.

Hi Everyone,

Pang Pang and I are looking so forward to Dogtoberfest this year! Petey is going too - probably the only boxer in a field of gold! He is a friendly boy, who loves everyone so I know he will have a good time too.

Pang Pang had a busy summer at work – mostly getting more attention than ever. Two of our residents painted her portrait, one attached for you to view. I am amazed at their talent and so thrilled they love her enough to paint her and write about her. She continues to be “Princess Pang Pang,” who lavishes her kisses and attention on her adoring seniors. She represented our community at several events, including a 911 Memorial, which landed her a photo in the local newspaper – not the first one. She seems to be welcome everywhere and when she is not with me I am asked “Why?” constantly.

At home our girl is Petey’s big sister and he has no idea that she is a princess. They square off (attached photo) and play until they drop. I learned long ago to buy them both the exact same toy because no matter what one has – the other wants! Although they compete for attention, they love each other, usually curling up together to sleep. When I take him to work she seems to coach him, as he does not have her maturity and self-esteem. We are working on that, knowing that she is very good for him. They are so different, which makes them all the more fun together.

Hope to see you Saturday. We are very excited to finally be participating in a GRCGLAR event!

I am sending you some pictures of Willy that I took last week while we were up at our home in Lake Tahoe. Willy has gone up there three times with us since we adopted him, and he is most definitely a "Tahoe Dog" now. He LOVES to swim in the lake and has a wonderful time swimming out to retrieve the tennis balls I throw for him. Willy did try to chase the ducks on the lake the first time we were up; but after having them take off and fly away after he was "This Close!" to them, he now ignores them.

Rita's Orson adopted!

Orson came to us in June. He was quite thin when he arrived but put on so much weight at the boarding kennel in Ontario (not too much though), that I didn't recognize him. Like all of the dogs from Taiwan, he had his share of challenges. (Here's the link to his introduction video: http://projecttaiwan.blogspot.com/2011/05/meet-ritas-orsoncoming-soon.html) Orson was lucky to find Rita and MJ, and we were lucky to get Orson.

The Servin family was looking to adopt their first dog and they had their hearts set on a Golden. This very close family includes a father and mother, adult daughter and a 7 year old grandson. The father told me that they were a family unit and that they take care of each other. Orson is now a part of this family unit and is being cared for and enjoyed by everyone.

Orson thanks Rita and MJ for rescuing him, nursing him back to health, and for sending him to us to find a loving home. Thanks, also, to the Welcome Waggin' for making him feel loved and secure upon his arrival. Thanks to Jo-Bea Kennels for noticing that he needed a few extra pounds and making sure he got them. Thank you to Barbara D. for coordinating his arrival and assisting in his placement. And thank you to Eva and the Placement Team for making this successful match.

We love Veena so much! We are so happy to have her, she is a real joy! She is so energetic and full of life, and a total character. Every time we go for a walk people stop to tell us how beautiful she is! She loves going to the beach and swimming in the ocean as well as hiking or anything else that we are doing. She really enjoys being with us where ever we are and is even learning to catch a frisbee now! She loves our big backyard and will even enjoy snacking on one of the apples from our tree. She loves taking walks with us and then having a nice nap pretty much anywhere in the house. We love her very much and everyone is enjoying her as part of the family. I am so happy this wonderful pup made his way to the US and thank Rita & MJ from the bottom of my heart. I immediately liked him when he arrived from Taiwan....well, I like them all but there was something special about him, but it just worked out I took a different dog home that night. We discovered that both his hips were in pretty bad shape - so we did an FHO on the worst side. He's also got some issues with his knees and hocks and all of this scared off potential adopters. After his surgery he went to stay with foster home Nanette and when she moved to Colorado a few months ago he came to stay with me. He also stayed for a short time with foster Jane J. when the Nanette went on vacation.

Brian is a goofy guy with a big fluffy coat and a stubborn streak. He's pretty quiet except when he plays tug with Woody - then he'll bark and growl with the toy in his mouth while getting dragged across the floor by Woody (links to his videos are below). Even though he can't jump, he is an expert countersurfer who is particularly fond of bread. He's learned to stretch his neck, sometimes propping himself up on the kitchen drawer pull and he'll grab the bag of whatever is on the counter, pull it down and inhale it. He once got ahold of a 5 lb tray of hamburger that was thawing on the counter - he got full after about 2-1/2 lbs. He hates going outside (except to go on walks) and you have to go out with him, tell him to do his business and wait for him to finish. As soon as he's done he runs right back inside and straight to the spot where the treats are kept - his second favorite spot in the house. (I like to think his favorite spot is laying next to me when I'm on the computer.) He and Woody are the best of friends and play all the time. He tries to play with Ori, but she's a bit of a princess. She does like to push him out of the way when he's getting attention - its all about her! But Brian doesn't mind - he'll just run over to see if he can get a treat instead. I'm so lucky to have found this sweet goofball!

Congratulations to Rita's Ju-Zi, who found her forever home with the Maatta faily.

Ju-Zi was found by a friend of Rita's last year, and when she had difficulty finding a home for Ju-Zi, she asked Rita & MJ if they could help. She's a small girl, at about 45 lbs, and a bit shy, but has been doing great since she got to the US.

The Maatta family has a Daschund and lost a Golden Retriever last year. They decided it was time to add another Golden to their family and contacted us a few months ago. We've been looking for the right pup for them, and initially called them about Casey. Lilly thought Ju-Zi might be a better fit since she was a few years older, and we quickly set up a meeting. The family came out to Culver Palms, along with a friend and their doxie Cooper. The family all liked Ju-Zi right away and she felt the same way and happily jumped in the car when it was time to go home. She's doing great in her new home, learning to play with Cooper. Her new name is Sunny, which fits her bright personality.

Ju-Zi thanks Rita & MJ for taking her in and getting her to us here in CA, and Barbara D. for approving her move. She was so happy to see the Welcome Waggin' after being in her crate for a longer than planned time due to a busy airport. She stayed overnight with me and then has been at CP where she's been able to get out with the walkers, who she thanks. She's grateful to Elaine & John M. for doing the home visit on her new family, and to the placement team and Eva for helping to match her up with this wonderful family.

Congratulations to Rita's Tina, who has found her forever home with the Koran family.

Tina is one of our recent transplants from Taiwan. Rita and MJ found her in a shelter where she was suffering from a skin condition. Under their expert care she quickly improved and was ready to make a new life for herself in California. Here's a video of Tina before she came to us:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zuAw7Q1irw0 . She came in with Ju-Zi and Casey last month and has been hanging out with new foster mom Mary Jane and learning dog-cat manners. Tina introduced Mary Jane to the concept of counter surfing in return.

This is the first dog for the Koran family. In their search for the right pup they realized a dog a bit older would be the best way to learn how it is to be owned by a dog, and they also wanted a pup who wouldn't overly annoy their cats. Tina seemed like she'd be a great fit and the family went out meet her. Since it was such a big decision and they knew it would be a big change in their lives, they thought about it overnight and the family all decided Tina was the dog for them. They came back to make it official and take this very sweet girl home. She's going great and they are having fun learning all about her, say she is wonderfully behaved and the all love her (well, except for the cats who are on strike and in hiding for now.)

Tina thanks Rita & MJ for finding her in the shelter, getting her well and sending her to the US. She thanks Barbara D. for approving her trip to CA, and the Welcome Waggin for meeting her at the aiport. It was a particularly busy night when she and the other girls came in and there was a long delay going through customs and immigration. Tina and her pals were soooooo very happy to get out of their kennels at last! Tina thanks Mary Jane for fostering her, and she thanks Joan and Ed for checking out this terrific home. Finally, she thanks the Placement Team and PA Eva for finding her a wonderful match. In the excitement of bringing her home they forgot to get their picture taken, but promise to send a family photo soon.

Rita's Brian has decided to live out his days with his foster mom, Sandy and her family! Brian's fit right into that family unit, and his favorite activity is wrestling with his younger brother, Woody. Having arrived in this country from Taiwan back in January, Brian's spent most of his life in the states with this crew, and we just can't see that changing!

Brian (who will remain Brian!) is most grateful to his rescuers, Rita and MJ, who found him and made him safe, getting him well and shipping him to the states so he could start his new life here. Thanks go out to the Welcome Waggin' for making his entry into the states a joyful one, and to first foster Krista DelColliano for making him feel right at home. Brian appreciates the help of the team at Culver Palms and the WLA dog walkers who keep things busy and happy for the boarders there. And thanks to the Placement Team for their efforts, although finding a better home for him than this one would have been a very tall order indeed!

The 1st anniversary of 'Lucky' (formerly Rita's Seven)

It is hard to believe that it was one year ago... August 1, 2010 that Rita's Seven came 'home', and became Lucky. He was a tall, handsome, very skinny boy. He was terrified on the ride home from Fullerton to San Clemente and he kept trying to climb into the front seat and get into my lap. Honestly, it is amazing we got home unscathed. We spent that first full day with him mostly pacing around and looking at stuff in the house (like couch, TV, frig, bed, etc) like he had never seen anything like them before. He was so thin that his head looked almost disproportionately large for his body, and his coat was kinda short and straight, but nice... and he had the LONGEST tail I had ever seen on a Golden. I had no idea if he was house trained or not, so in almost a paranoia, every hour, I slapped on his leash and out we went for a short walk to give him opportunities to do his business and to see where he lived. He must have thought I was crazy. In those early days, clearly he had no idea what dog toys were for, how to enjoy a tummy rub, or what to do with a Milk Bone.

As those first weeks passed into months, the daily routine has become as comfortable as his cherished spot on the couch. We play with vigor with our fleece stuffed toys and things that squeak. He enjoys his daily brushings, and he tolerates like a trooper his probably all-too-frequent baths. Then after about 6 months together, one day I looked at him when we were out for one of our walks (we walk together between 6 and 8 miles every day) and said to myself, "Where did those curls come from... and those tummy feathers that are about 8 inches long?" And his REALLY long tail... all of a sudden there were feathers on his tail that were about a foot long! I guess that good nutrition has had a very positive impact on his coat, which if I do say so my self, is to die for.

But mainly, it is just the love and the level of comfort... we both know that we are there for each other. No matter what, there is always a cold wet nose and a kiss for me, and no matter what I have a huge fluffy hug I can inflict on him. Lucky has doggie friends and people friends and aunties and uncles (like David and Sonsee and Denise) and cousins (like Lani, and Kai and Fletcher and Cooper and Max), He has regular meals, regular grooming... but mostly he has a home where he knows he is loved and appreciated. I guess if you ask him, he would tell you that the past year has been a good one. So would I.

Hi everyone,

As promised, a couple of photos of our princess on the anniversary of her “Gotcha Day.” She had a great time with her special doggie cake and did not want to share it with her four-legged pals who came to her party. We are having an absolutely remarkable time with Rita's Mia (who we now named Golda). Our kids are absolutely in LOVE WITH HER; as are we. My youngest was afraid of her when we adopted her; and now we cant keep him away from her; I don't know who kisses who more!

We are very impressed with your organization and feel that your team made the perfect match for us. Tom, Golda's foster "father--if you will" was such a kind person to us and clearly took great care of Golda.

We certainly will keep you and Tom well apprised of Golda's achievements. Tom was right, she is quite the swimmer. You are such great people to volunteer for such a wonderful organization.

Congratulations to Maggie's Alexander, who found his forever home with the Andre family.

Alexander came to us from Maggie & ARTT. We don't know his history, but this handsome, goofy boy has a great present and future and isn't spending any time looking back! He came to CA in April and has been spending time with Debbie & Paul G. while waiting for his forever home. He got along great with their dogs and his terrific personality charmed them enough for them to overlook some of his mischieviousness. When he ate part of Debbie's War & Peace book she just said it was a really long book and she didn't have time to read it, so no big deal. The Andre family was looking for a new addition to their family and a companion for their dog Penny. The Placement Team thought they would provide a wonderful home for Alexander and after talking to them they agreed he sounded like a fit. The family drove out to meet Alexander on Saturday and it didn't take long for them to know he was the one. I got a note that he is settling in just fine and he and Penny are having blast playing.

Alexander thanks Maggie and ARRT for finding him and sending him to CA, and Barbara D. for approving his trip to us. He was ecstatic to meet the Welcome Waggin' team and thanks Nestor and Bobby for taking him home overnight. He's so happy to have been able to spend the last couple of months with Debbie and Paul and will be forever grateful to them for helping him along with his training. He thanks Laura M. for scouting out his new family. And, he gives a big Paw Up to the Placement Team and PA Dona for finding him such a great match. Congratulations to Rita's Mia, who found her forever home with the Meppen family.

Mia was rescued from a shelter by Rita and MJ last year. They got her healthy and ready to come to the US, and she arrived here in March, along with Nina. She has been staying with foster dad Tom W. One of the first things she did when she got to his house was dive in the pool - she loves to swim, play with balls and play with her foster brother and sisters. The Meppen family lost their last dog about two years ago, and decided to wait for their kids to get a bit older before bringing in a new dog. They recently decided now was the time. In reviewing their application and home visit, the Placement Team felt they would be a great home for Mia. She looked so solemn in her pictures, that she wasn't one of the dogs they were looking at, but after talking to us and to Tom they realized she sounded perfect. And when they met her in person, they found out that she was indeed perfect for them. She is already settling in and the Meppens adore her.

Mia thanks Rita & MJ for getting her out of the shelter and into rescue in Taiwan, and Barbara D. for approving her trip to the US. She was so happy to have the Welcome Waggin' waiting for her and gives doggy kisses. She thanks Tom W. for giving her such a great temporary home. Hi All,

It was last Father’s Day when I picked up Pang Pang! We are having a big party for her tomorrow – will send you all some photos. One of the staff members is actually baking her a healthy cake with a recipe we found on-line. Regardless, our girl is still on a diet so she won’t get much.

One of our residents wrote the attached poem. He is a senior who loves rap and when he recites this, he does so in a rap style. It is just wonderful. I keep telling you all how much everyone loves Pang Pang. They even write about her!

The Underground Fantastic

It all began that wonderful Friday morning around ten. As I walked into the Country Village Leasing Office, that’s when I first met my enchanting new friend. She was golden as sun beams streaming from the sky. Almost human-like with intelligent eyes; freshly groomed with a scent of honey suckle rose, sitting in a nearby corner, with an eye catching pose. I approached her with a slight apprehension. She raised her paw, as I extended my hand; we slapped five and then ten. I said, “Hey, Golden Lady, what’s your name?” She barked, wagged her tail and softly whispered, “Pang Pang”. A multi million dollars ran through my mind, gee whiz, this dog is one of a kind. Now we all remember Old Yeller, Rin Tin Tin, Deputy Dog and Big Ben. They’ve come and gone, done their thing, but none can compare to Pang Pang. She began to tell me about her history; joyful moments and times of misty colored memories. Her eyes began to shine like a cat in the dark that hypnotizes me with an affixation of her words. I stood frozen, like a man on ice, as she welcomed me into her world. A far off place, a distant shore, this was surly no fairy tale.

“I like to eat,” she said to me, “I have a voracious appetite. I’ll eat yours, I’ll eat mine, I could eat all night. After I eat I like to take a little nap. My owners got rid of me, when I ate the food for the cat. That was it, they had enough. They put me in the street, they said, “You’re big enough to stand on your feet.” My nights were lonely, my days were blue, my sun didn’t shine the way it use to do and so when I lay me down at night, my blanket was the sky and slowly I began to lose the twinkle in my eyes. For forty days and forty nights I was so all alone. I had no warmth or comfort, no home to call my own. I walked all day and slept all night; searching garbage cans for just a little bite. I soon would discover I was not alone; there were hundreds just like me, searching for a home. There was Poppy, Marengo, Jetty, Jet, Lucy, Lila and a cat named Tibet! We banded together like a group of thieves, hitting every garbage can, we could smell or see. Some of the town’s people became weary of our tactics, while supporters began to call us the Underground Fantastic. The will to live is what they saw in us and we were in no hurry to return to the dust. We were young and we were cool. We had no degrees from the Ivy League schools; Cambridge, Harvard or Canton. Finding a job was out of the question, we did what we must, one hundred strong and tough.” A slight tear began to fall from her check. She choked up for a moment but continued to speak. “Then came the day of the Big Truck Round Up. They called on the terminator to bust and move. When the job was finished he had holes in his shoes. They sent us to a place they called “rest” but I called it “R.I.P.” It was good for them but not for us or me!

My beautiful friends and the family within were destroyed over and over again. The clock was ticking, my heart was racing. Would I ever escape this place? I dreamed I’d be rescued by someone really nice, someone who loved me, someone to treat me right. As morning arrived a strange shadow fell on the wall. The clock had run out it was time to fall. They took me to the gallows and I took my last gulp, as my heart began to sink. This time Super Man would not arrive. I stared into the abyss; it was my time to die. Tears filled my eyes and my body did shake. I prayed to the Lord for my soul to take. I thought about my mother, my father, my sister and brothers. I was ready to meet them and all the others, Poppy, Marengo, Jetty, Jet, Lucy, Lila and a cat named Tibet. Suddenly I heard a shout from the gallows below and someone said, “Let Pang Pang go!” I didn’t know her name and I had never seen her face, but she said to me, “I’m getting you out of this place.” The door flew open and I took a deep breath. The next thing I knew I was on a jet; U.S.A, red, white and blue - Country Village for me, Country Village for you!”

Pang Pang, thank you for your story. You bring cool where there’s hot and warmth where there is not.

Just wanted to update you on Macy. She is doing amazingly well. She is so sweet, gentle, well behaved and adorable. Everyone who has met her adores her. As you know, Morgan, who passed away in March, was a therapy dog. She was certified with Delta and visited at the Childrens Hospital of Orange County. Macy has all the right personality traits to be an amazing therapy dog. She loves all people, is very gentle and well behaved and nothing much (loud noises etc) phases her. Unfortunatey with my business commitments - I do not have time to do therapy work with Macy. However, a friend of mine who I met doing therapy work - her dog passed away recently and she adores Macy and is now working with her to be a therapy dog. She hopes to take the test with her in October. In preparation for the test - Macy is going lots of places with Dalene - on Friday night she went to the Irvine Spectrum and had dinner there. Literally - Macy gets out more than I do. Dalene also teaches piano - so Macy is going once a week to “piano lessons” - so she can meet the kids and learn to sit quietly while they have their piano lessons. I am so delighted - since I think she gets bored sitting all day long in my home office - even so I do take her for two walks a day and out to play at lunch time, she does enjoy meeting new people a lot and I think she and Dalene will be a great therapy team. Perhaps in the next few years my schedule will lighten up and I can take her as well.

I attached a picture of Macy “in full flight” She has the most comical run - kind of “bounces along” - it cracks everyone up!!! Probably because she walked on three legs for the first part of her life. As you can see in the one picture she is running on two legs on the same side of her body. She just looks “full of joy” when she runs - as demonstrated in the pictures. Also a more “serious” picture of her with her newest “prized possession!”

I will keep you posted on her therapy dog training.

These wonderful-gorgeous Goldens have been a part of our lives for many years. In recent years we have adopted mostly senior Goldens, five now through GRCGLAR, usually have two at a time, but we were so smitted by Gary that we decided we had to include Gary in our family. Don't know how many pictures you have seen of Gary - he's like this big lumbering, white bear, and such a fun and loving big fellow. And he gets along so nicely with our other two fellows Moof and Buddy. I will include a few pictures and we are working on getting a couple of pictures of Gary's new parents (us) so that the Taiwanese rescuers can see who we all are. When you see these guys and gals you can't help but have a moment of wonder about their history but it is probably just as well to stayed focus on the new lives we are giving them. My blessings to all who made it possible for Gary to enter our lives. I can assure you he will have the lovingest of homes - we are devoted to our Golden guys.

Happy 2-Year Gotcha Day, Kai!

Today is Kai's 6th birthday and his 2nd year with us. Because no one knows his actual birthdate we chose 5/31 since it was the day Kai came into our lives.

He is very much loved, and spoiled. He is so very smart when he wants to be... He loves being here in San Clemente, although this past winter was hard on his bones. He continues to surprise all of us with his sudden outbursts of speed and his ability to jump into a chair and out again. Kai has trained me so that if he sits at my feet and barks at me, I know he wants to sit in my chair.

We are so thankful to Maggie and Joseph of ARTT for not letting him die in the hospital, and to you and everyone else at GRCGLA Rescue for allowing us to make Kai a very much loved member of our family.

Rita's Gary adopted!

Congratulations to Rita's Gary, who has found his forever home with failed foster parents, Paul and Leslie.

Rita's Gary is our most recent arrival from Taiwan, coming in several weeks ago. Gary is 5-6 years old and is just a wonderful, well-mannered dog with a beautiful cream coat (I still want to know what kind of shampoo they use on these dogs to get them so soft!). We had some new volunteerrs come out to join the Welcome Waggin, including Paul who agreed to take Gary home overnight. Right off the bat, Paul and Leslie's pup, Buddy, and Gary started playing very nicely. And although Mufasa wasn't ready to wrestle, he got along just fine with the new guy. Paul dropped off Gary at CP the next day (Monday) for vetting, but when he returned on Tuesday for dog walking duties he realized how easy Gary was and asked if he could foster him.

Its been a busy year for the Paul and Leslie. In January they adopted Mufasa (now known as Moof) and a few days later they lost their Golden, Rudolph. In late February they adopted Ready, who went back to his original name of Buddy. They certainly weren't planning on adding a third pup to their household. But Gary had other plans. He fit in so well with the other dogs, and Buddy has so much fun playing with him, that when I asked Paul for some help in getting Gary's bio ready for the website he was hemming and hawing a bit. Gary came in with some hip x-rays which we needed to have evaluated and, after his appointment, Paul said he and Leslie wanted to keep this affectionate fellow. (He does have hip dysplasia, but doesn't seem to have pain or symptoms so Paul will just keep him on glucosamine, keep his weight down, limit high-impact activities and hope surgery isn't needed in the future.)

Gary is so very thankful to Rita and MJ for finding him and getting him healthy to travel. He thanks Barbara D. for approving his trip to CA, and he was so happy to see the Welcome Waggin' at LAX. Fate brought him together with his new dad that night - he can't imagine a better home than the one he chose. And he thanks Denise P. for doing the paperwork to make the match legal. We are waiting for a full family portrait, but in the meantime here is Gary with Buddy and Moof and a couple of other shots.

Update from Rita's Melissa, now called Nora

Nora is doing just great. Today we are going to an obedience class. Not sure how she'll take to that but only one way to find out. She's really settling in. She knows how to sit when we ask her. She "asks" Alan to take her for a walk by standing in front of him when he's watching TV and wagging her tail. Of course, Alan takes her out. She has captured our hearts. So sweet, so pretty and so endearing. We'll get those pictures, asap. Nora says, "Woof, woof, and thank you to everyone who helped her."

She fits into our home life perfectly. We have taken her camping 3 times now and she seems to have a great time. She follows my son everywhere he goes. Millie plays with the 2 small dogs and the cat has even accepted her into our family.
