Postcard from Maggie's Dan

Hi All:

I am afraid I have not been very good at keeping everyone posted on how Cabo (formally Maggie's Dan) is doing and I do apologize. We absolutely love him!! He is everything that we wanted in a dog and more. He is adapting to his new home well. When we first brought him home he was having difficulty keeping up with our 11-year old "Summer Girl" on our daily walks. He now does the 30 minute walk every day with no problem and then I throw the ball for him for another 10 minutes. He is very healthy and very strong. He walks well on a leash and will sit and lie down on command (so his English is getting better). We right away had an issue with the two dogs fighting over soft toys so we have simply removed all soft toys from the house. In an attempt to reintroduce the soft toys at Christmas, they fought again so it looks like the two of them will just have to do without them. Not a problem because they do not fight over balls, food or attention so all is peaceful. We have had him to the groomers a couple of times and they just love him. He is always well-behaved and he enjoys all of the attention he gets. I have added some photos here which include a trip to our beach condo (he did very well in an elevator, my guess is that he had been in one before), a romp in the autumn leaves and hanging out with the family. Enjoy and thank you to you all for allowing us to adopt such a great dog.

Happy New Year!
Linda

Postcard from Rita's Boss

Hi!

I want to send you some pictures of my first Christmas. I got some new toys. My favorite toy, though, is a plush lion that I got when I first came here. I got to pick out my own bed at Kahoots. Its a cool store where they like to give treats to dogs. I have been on my best behavior since I came here. I've never had any accidents, and my family thinks I am very smart because I learn so fast. Kristin talks to me in Chinese but I'm trying to learn English fast. I am learning lie down, stay, and when its time to go in my bed. My family also thinks I am so friendly because I love everybody to pet me. I was such a gentleman last night at Christmas Eve dinner that I was able to stay and visit. I never jumped up or got into anything I shouldn't. I heard them talking about how lucky they are to have me and they still can't believe I'm here. I'm resting right now because later today I was invited to go with my family to my Aunt's house. She visits me, too, and thinks I am a very good dog.

Merry Christmas,
Boss

P.S. They call me Ollie now. I think I like my new name. I always come when they call me.

Rita's Elvis has left the building...

Rita's Elvis was introduced to Terry & Julie B. yesterday, and all agreed this was a wonderful match! Elvis joins a dog-loving household of past adopters, and will be taking up residence with Rita's Lily, a lovely young lady who joined us from Taiwan earlier this year; maybe they can swap stories about the "old country". The match was a bittersweet one for foster mom, Kriss H., who had been totally charmed by this handsome lad and found him to be the perfect dog.

Elvis owes his undying gratitude to Rita and MJ, who saved his life and helped him find his way to the states, to our Welcome Waggin' team for making his entry into the States safe and happy, and to foster mom Kriss, who made him at home until he found a permanent one.

Rita's Olla Gets Her Holiday Wish

Rita's Olla was enthusiastically welcomed into her new home yesterday with Kathy and Creig of San Pedro.   Creig said he was watching from the front window as Olla jumped out of the car foster mom's car and was simply breathless by her beauty.  Kathy couldn't get over that this was the same neglected, dirty and tattered golden rescued by Rita in Taiwan.   Both of their sons commented on how happy she looked and welcomed her with open arms to her new home.  Olla (who will be called Molly) also has a visiting playmate in Cody, a 2 year old golden doodle owned by Kathy and Creig's son.  Olla expressed her joy and pranced around her new home and yard with total glee...kind of like a kid on Christmas morning!!

Big thanks to Rita from Taiwan for rescuing this sweet golden girl and helping her to become the beautiful dog she was destined to be; Barbara D. and our Welcome Waggin crew for helping Olla settle into the US from her first touchdown at LAX; Camp Nakanashi lead by Mariko for fostering Olla and helping her overcome a queazy stomach from traveling so far (thanks Mariko for giving Olla the opportunity to relax and get ready for her forever home); and Diane D. for scouting out this lovely home and assisting in the adoption with Mariko yesterday.

Rita's Willie adopted!

Rita's Willie left the Cook's last evening and became a permanent part of Stephanie O's family! Stephanie, Buster and Kiara (a GRCGLAR alum) made their way from Hawthorne to Cheryl's place last evening, and everyone got along so well they decided to make it permanent!

Cheryl's made 3 placements this week! This one comes along with an assist from the rest of the Welcome Waggin' team, who made sure Willie's arrival was safe and happy, as well as Karen G., who found Willie this lovely home. Special thanks to foster mom Cheryl for her tender loving care, and to Rita and MJ who made a safe new life possible for this lovely guy!

Willie will heretofore be known as "Tai".

Congratulations to everyone!

Rita's Boss adopted!

Rita's Boss went home last Saturday with the Allinghams of Chino Hills! The adopters came out and actually met both Boss and Hebe, but ultimately, Boss was the guy of their dreams. Rumor has it that Boss already had gifts under their tree!

Boss will always be grateful to Rita and MJ who gave him a second chance at life, to the Welcome Waggin' team who made sure his arrival into the states was safe and uneventful, and to foster mom, Cheryl C., for keeping him safe and making him feel right at home!. Special thanks to Pat J., who found Boss this lovely home for the holidays!

Rita's Hebe adopted!

Rita's Hebe ("Heeebeee") went home today with the Bleckman family of Pasadena. She now has her own parents, a teenage boy, her own Shih Tzu, and a home of her own. Hebe's sends her love and thanks to Rita and MJ, who made her a great new life, to the Welcome Waggin' team, who gave her such a wonderful greeting, to the west side team who kept her busy this past week, and particularly to Aunt Cheryl, who made the introductions. Special thanks to Julie V. for finding Hebe her special new home!

Willie & Elvis at the airport in Taiwan

Rita's Mars adopted!

It is with great joy that I'm able to announce that Rita's Mars has decided to stay with the Cook family, where's he's been enjoying the royal treatment as a foster dog these past two weeks! Cheryl had her eye on Mars since his original story was posted by Rita and MJ from Taiwan, and she's been keeping the home fires burning for him ever since. Having lost their beloved Jackson recently, the Cooks were looking for a gentle, sweet cat- and little-dog-friendly golden to fill out their clan, and Mars filled the bill on all accounts.

I can't imagine a more fitting and loving home for this beautiful boy, and a more deserving family to adopt the likes of him.

Mars sends his fondest gratitude to Rita and MJ for saving him, getting him well and sending him along to us, as well as to the Welcome Waggin' who made sure his entry into the states was smooth and happy! A lovely "home for the holidays" to get things rolling this season!

Meet Sonia

From Maggie Chen:

We saved a pretty girl named Sonia this early morning. She is currently boarding at the vet's. She is around 2 year sold, 51 lbs, female, Ehrlichia platys/canis tested positive; the other tests are negative. She will be spayed and starts to be under medication of Ehrlichia. By the way, she is very sweet, can take commands and has good manners. We had her chip-scanned but found no information.

Update from Gilligan (formerly Maggie's David)

From Gilligan's adopter...

Gilligan is doing very well. He's being schooled a little by his new lab friends Woogie and Ernie. He plays a little too aggressively but they correct him and it seems to be working. The biting is getting better but not gone yet. He seems REALLY happy and just loves meeting people. I have been leaving him alone in the house for up to an hour uncrated and he just sits on the bed - no destruction. I've enclosed some pictures. He is allowed in the pool now but doesn't swim yet. He loves to sit on the first step and cool off and splash. Ill keep you updated. I really love this guy!

Thanks,
Pete

A great Thanksgiving for four Goldens!

Happy Thanksgiving Eve,

Our four latest arrivals from Taiwan, Boss, Mars, Hebe and Olla, have touched down in America and already loving it!

Welcome Waggin'-eers Ira L, Cheryl C, Mariko, Barbara S and Mike V were on hand to accept delivery of the precious cargo. After getting "sprung" from their travel kennels, the kids did a little business, had a little fresh air and water and managed to become celebrities as Channels 4 and 7 were on hand to document their first steps on American soil. From there, Hebe and Boss were whisked off to Culver Palms, while Olla headed home with Mariko and Mars went with Cheryl.

Thanks to everyone who helped pull this off and Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!

Four Goldens due to arrive today!

Maggie's Thomas adopted!

Maggie's Thomas was adopted today by former adopters, Alan and Mike, of Los Angeles, taking this sweet boy from a true rags to riches home. A survivor of the horrific typhoon, Morack, which hit Taiwan, Thomas was found by Maggie Chen of ARTT lying outside a city business alleyway beside a garbage collection area on the wet ground. Arriving early October to LAX, Thomas found a sanctuary in foster, Terry J., where he learned some of the basics and more importantly he communicated to us what he needed in a new family here in Southern California.

Alan and Mike turned out to be the humans destined for Thomas. As a bonus, Alan and Mike's neighbor, Jackie, and her female German Shepherd, Cassie, would be spending a lot of time with Thomas so they came to the adoption meeting to make sure the dogs liked each other. Sure enough, Cassie and Thomas are also destined to become the best of friends. Thomas happily greeted his new families with tail wags and nestling his head in their laps.

It was so evident how much Alan, Mike and Jackie adored their dogs and were deeply saddened by the loss of their Golden Retriever, Buddy (adopted from GRCGLARescue in 2003). With a lovely home in the Hollywood Hills, Thomas will be treated to a life of canine indulgence, enjoying the very best with folks who have the biggest of hearts!

Thank you Maggie of ARTT, the Welcome Waggin Crew who greeted Thomas upon arrival to the U.S., Barbara D. for her leadership in guiding these dogs to a new life, Terry J. for fostering Thomas and helping him find his mojo, and to Laura M. for scouting out these truly wonderful, committed folks during her homevisit.

Congratulations Thomas...you are one special boy!

Look at Willie now!

Meet Olla

Olla was found when I went to Yong-an for a walk early in May this year. There were several stray dogs wondering near the pavilion at the bay, and one of them was scary thin. When I gave a second glance I realised that she's a Golden retreiver whoes skin condition was also the worst among them.

I went back to down town to the Vet where I got some medicine that could help her on the skin and get rid of some flea. The next day my sister help me out sending her to Chang-chun Vet hospital in Taoyuan.

She is around 3 years old, had flea, demodicosis and Ehrlichiosis. Luckily the vet gave the right treatment so she recovered quite well. But her front teeth were almost all gone. I guess she was so starving that she would eat anything even it's hard, like a rock. All other teeth are in good shape, therefore she can still eat normally.

Now as you can see in the picture she is very healthy with new skin and soft hair. Quite naughty when she sees snacks, has good interaction with human. She deserves a new home and a family who would really love and take good care of her.

Meet Hebe

She was rescued from an animal shelter and is 3-4 yrs old.

Rita's Luna adopted!

Rita’s Luna found her special home with the Galli family of Los Angeles on Saturday! Luna came to us from Taiwan last month, where she had been rescued, loved and rehabilitated by our best rescue friends, Rita and MJ. Luna and the Gallis hit it off right away, and is currently being indulged and doted in the style we expect all our rescues to enjoy.

Luna will always be most grateful to Rita and MJ who saved her and kept her safe until they could find her passage to the states. Luna sends thanks to the Welcome Waggoneers who met her at LAX and helped make her transition as easy possible. Special thanks go to diligent foster mom, Mariko, whose updates on Luna’s preferences and behaviors made it easy to make her a good match, and also to Cheryl C., who found Luna this great home!

Boss: found on the streets, stabbed

Boss was found stabbed in the back. He needed 28 stitches. He has since recovered and is a beautiful, 4-yr old headed for the U.S. soon!

Mars is ready

Rita and MJ created this video of Mars' journey, so far. They have found a volunteer passenger for him so he should be in the U.S. towards the end of the month.

Maggie's Dan adopted

Maggie's Dan met his match on Thursday evening, and went home with Linda & Curt of San Diego; Dan is the dude pictured here with the tennis ball in his mouth!

Dan came to us a bit more than a week before, having flown in from Taiwan, one of those miracle rescues from our Taiwan rescue angels. Having completed his rehabilitation in Taiwan and receiving a clean bill of health, he made the long journey to the US in search of a new life. It didn't take him long to connect with the Welkers, who recognized how special Dan was and so made the huge trip from San Diego all the way to the west side to meet him and make him their own. Dan is looking forward to a happy life in SD and enjoying the company of this great family, and their pretty girl, Summer.

Dan's deepest gratitude will always go back to his angels in Taiwan, Maggie Chen and the ART folks, who gave him a new start against all odds. He sends thanks to the Welcome Waggin' contingent of Ira and Cheryl , who made sure his welcome to the states went smoothly, and particularly to Cheryl who fostered him (despite his gleeful attempts to apprehend some of her cats!) and made sure his vetting was done locally. Dan also sends a great big thank you to Barbara R and the incorrigible Woodman, who found him this great family (he's looking forward to meeting Woody in person and talking about tennis balls soon!)

Thanks to all of the GRCGLARescue family for making saves like this one possible.

Maggie's David adopted!

I'm very happy to announce that Maggie's David was adopted by Peter M. of Redondo Beach!

David arrived to the U.S. about 2 months ago and his story is an inspiring one of a dog left lying on the street after a run-in with a motorcycle. Thanks to a couple good citizens in Taiwan and Maggie Chen with ARTT...David quickly found refuge and care which prepared him for a better life here in Southern California...and the eventual meeting of his human companion, Peter.

For those who met David...he could have doubled for Marley in the famous movie/book Marley & Me with an energy level and gusto for anything and everything that he touched. Merely operating within his nature, David demonstrated his exuberance for this new world in a manner which would challenge even the most patient of puppy owners! After several weeks of developing a routine and walking with volunteers, David started to find his mojo and soon was introduced to Peter.

Peter spent time with David (whom he now calls Gilligan)...a very appropriate name for this sweet goof ball...and found this dog quickly tugged at his heart strings. Gilligan happily went home with Peter, a devoted dog lover and one totally committed to giving Gilligan all he needs to reach his full potential. The updates so far have been great and Gilligan is finding his way in this world with the leadership and love of Peter. Peter told me "he's happy and that makes me very happy!"

Much thanks goes to numerous folks who have touched the life of this dog on his rescue journey thus far including: Maggie Chen of ARTT, the GRCGLARescue Welcome Waggin Crew who greeted David at LAX, David & Sonsee, Joyce T, Kriss H and all the volunteers who walked David at Culver Palms...Colleen P, Cheryl C, Jody R and others. Thank you to Jody for facilitating this adoption! Thank you Diane D for scouting out such a terrific human and home for this dog.

Peter often throws dog parties where the humans eat peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and the dogs eat steak! Now that's truly a dog's life. I am very happy for David (Gilligan) and look forward to getting updates and pics from Peter to share.

This is truly a great success story and one of the many reasons why I'm so proud of this organization and the amazing work we do on behalf of homeless goldens wherever they arrive from!

Congratulations Gilligan and Peter!

Maggie's Dan has arrived!

From GRCGLARescue volunteer, Ira:
Maggie's Dan, quite a dapper fellow, arrived at LAX earlier this evening and was greeted by Welcome Waggin'-ers Cheryl and Ira. He came in with a bunch of other dogs from other rescues. After getting sprung from his kennel at LAX, Dan did a little business and immediately started to play ball. Even after 12 hours of flight, he in great spirits and ready to play! The extremely handsome boy went home with Cheryl.

Dan wants to thank Maggie for rescuing him, Barbara D. for making arrangements to bring him to America, Miss Hsi Chih Yun for escorting him here and Cheryl for fostering him...what a great team!

From GRCGLARescue volunteer, Cheryl:
What a handsome boy! We had a good night. He has already learned how to use the doggy door, no accidents, was very hungry (eating everyone's food... dogs, cats LOL)... and loves his tennis balls and toys!
So far, good with the little dogs. OK with the cats but needs supervision. Just a sweetheart who wants to be with his human when he's not playing with a tennis ball or toy. My husband has him out right now for his first walk on US soil. Here's a video clip from this morning and slideshow below. Much thanks to Ira for all his help last night. He's the greatest! View Dan's photo album created by Cheryl, HERE.

Maggie's Golden adopted!

Maggie’s Golden, our happy little puppy from last week’s big plane ride, went home today to be part of our own Sandy D.’s family! You may remember that Sandy lost both Lucky and Arliss last month, and there’s been a big hole in her heart waiting for someone to come along and bring some golden smiles back into her days. Little Golden is just the ticket, one of the happiest, friendliest little bugs we’ve met in some time. Sandy’s promised to make him earn his keep by working as a Pet Expo ambassador, in the great tradition of his uncle, Lucky.

Thank you to Maggie and the ARTT team for getting Golden safe and sending him to us, to the Welcome Waggin’ crew for welcoming this lovely youngster to the states, and to Aunt Lily who made him feel right at home until his new mom could come to claim him.

Safe arrival for Golden, Thomas & Luna

From GRCGLAR volunteer, Denise:
It was a lovely California day to welcome our three Taiwan golden refugees - Thomas (5 year old male), Luna (young female), and Golden (3 month old male pup). They all arrived safely and happy to feel the grass under their feet. The young pup, Golden, popped out of his crate showering Barbara D. with puppy kisses. Golden headed home with Barbara to be fostered in Riverside while Luna made her way to Hawthorne with Mariko. Thomas traveled with me south to Orange County where he'll be fostered in the next day or two. Much thanks to Marty F. for lending a helping hand today which was graciously appreciated.

All the dogs are lovely and got along well with each other!

Welcome Thomas, Luna and Golden!

From GRCGLAR volunteer, Mariko:
Golden, Thomas, and Luna (and Candice) all safely arrived in the U.S. I took some videos of Golden, Thomas, and Luna at the airport, and one of Luna at my house. Sorry for the lower quality of the videos (I used my digital camera's movie function). I hope you enjoy watching them!

Here comes Dan!

From Maggie Chen:

One of ART's dedicated volunteers saved a golden retriver in April on the way to the airport where she was helping ART's dogs check-in. The abandonded dog named Dan was in a very bad situtation. The rescuer sent Dan to the vet's for all the check-ups and took care of all the huge bills for Dan's treatment.

After a few months of loving care and efforts, Dan is now a changed dog. Attached is all the information forwarded by the rescuer. I will send you Dan's photos after the rescue right after this.

I would be very much appreciated if you could give Dan a chance. Thank you.

Sincerely yours,

Maggie Chen
Animal Rescue Team TAIWAN

From Dan's foster home:

Dan was rescued in April 2009. He was found outside an abandoned house, sad and alone. According to the people who lives near by the abandoned house, Dan seems was abandoned by his owner, someone ever mentioned Dan was hitting by a car so he was not able to walk normal neither stand long. We took Dan out of that place and send him to animal hospital directly. Due to lack of nutrition and the bad environment, Dan was beginning to develop a skin problem and the weight was only ~55 lb when rescued.

Dan stayed in Animal hospital for treatments for 4 months long. Now Dan is a healthy and handsome dog. Good in walk and is able to run for his favorite – BALL. Dan gets along with other dogs well but we have not tried to put him along with cats or puppies. “Dan is a people dog actually, he loves to be around people very much”, the foster mom says so.

Dan does not pee or poo in his crate at all, a very steady dog, knowing the command “sit” ( in mandarin ) very well and like to shake hands with people very much. We do not know Dan’s history, but do know that he deserves a family.

Meet our Mars

From Rita...

Dear Barbara,

He is Mars. He was from animal shelter. When I first time saw the Mars's pictures on the website I was feel so shock and sad. We even can not recognized he is a Golden. He exhibited no hopefulness in the eyes, so we bring he out of shelter and took him to vet. The vet gave him a checkup, unfortunate his canine distemper test is positive. I've tried every treatment the vet suggested and now Mars is completely recover of distemper. He is still under treatment of skin problem and he has recover so well. Mars is around 4-5 years old and he is sweet boy. Could you take him when he has recover his health? I have attached some pictures of Mars when he in the shelter and some is just take 2 days ago.

Here is the video we made one month ago when we first time bring Mars to vet.

Trigon: Memorial Tribute

Trigon was found by Rita and MJ in a shelter. He was missing a leg and emaciated, but still a sweet, friendly and loving Golden. Before long, it was clear that Trigon had contracted distemper and although they tried valiantly to save him, Trigon passed away. Rita and MJ made this lovely video to commemorate their journey with Trigon.

Maggie's Tony adopted!

Maggie's Tony was adopted just a week after arriving on U.S. soil today by Cindy and Tom P. of Seal Beach. 'T' as he will be called by his new family happily embraced his big new home with lots of space to run inside and outside and cool shady places to hang out. Within the first 30 seconds, 'T' greeted his new family as if he had known them all his life. New toys and treats greeted him and this happy boy was simply in heaven.

Much thanks goes to Maggie and ARTT and all the great work they do in Taiwan to give these dogs a second chance at life. For those who have read Tony's story - he was found dumped in a dam, skinny and alone. ARTT rescued him and gave him a fresh new start. Thanks goes to Uncle Ira, our Welcome Waggin' Ambassador, and the rescue crew who greeted Tony at LAX including Julie F. who fostered this boy. Tony spent a week with 11-month old GRCGLARescue Golden, Buddy, at Julie's. Julie and her beau, Jack, helped Tony prepare for his new life with his forever family...all the while forming a great relationship with Buddy. Thank you Daryl D. for doing the homevisit for this wonderful family.

Below is a photo of T's new family along with Julie, Jack and their golden, Buddy (at left).

Thomas: abandoned and heartworm positive

From Maggie Chen, ARTT...
I wondered if you heard of a devastating typhoon hit Taiwan on 8/8. Many crated dogs were drowned in the floods. Some were even left behind after the villagers had been evacuated. We rescued a golden retriver with a head of a Laborador abandoned in front of a breakfast store. Attached please see his photos. Do you think your organization can help this dog? He was heartworme tested positive and is currently under treatment.
